An island worth the boat · Hanoi, Vietnam
A community adventure playground built out on Bãi Giữa, the long alluvial island sitting in the middle of the Red River directly beneath Long Biên bridge. The island itself is open farmland — banana plantations, maize and vegetable plots with narrow footpaths threading between them — worked by people who live on and beside it. It is separated from the city bank by a narrow channel and reached only on foot. Nothing here is ticketed, signposted or maintained by the city.
A whole farmed island in the middle of the Red River, ten minutes' walk from the Old Quarter and almost nobody on it.
