Green space the city keeps · Istanbul, Turkey

A sprawling wooded park above Beşiktaş that was once part of Yıldız Palace, commissioned by Sultan Abdülhamid II in the 1880s. It holds more than 120 tree species, artificial lakes, fountains and restored Ottoman summer houses, with several cafes and restaurants inside. Paths climb steeply, rewarding walkers with Bosphorus glimpses through the trees.
A cool, shady hill of old-growth trees and lake views a short walk from the Bosphorus shore.
