A temple people come back to · İhsaniye, Turkey
Photo: Raicem · CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
A domed Byzantine church carved whole out of a tuff cliff on the edge of a living Phrygian Valley village, ringed by Roman chamber tombs, cave dwellings and fairy chimneys.
It's Cappadocia-style rock architecture with none of the balloons — a working village 33 km from Afyon that foreign itineraries simply skip.
It's only worth the detour Apr–Jun & Sep–Oct. Turn up outside that window and you're looking at a different place; we'd rather say so than sell you the photo.
