A 1.4-kilometre pedestrian boulevard running through Beyoğlu from Tünel Square up to Taksim Square, İstiklal Avenue is lined with 19th- and early 20th-century facades, arcades and passages. A historic red tram trundles down its centre while shops, bookstores, cafes and cinemas fill the buildings and side lanes. It is one of the busiest streets in the city, drawing large crowds day and night.
The pulse of modern Istanbul, best experienced simply by walking it end to end.
