Somewhere to stop moving · Istanbul, Turkey

Built in 1741 in the Ottoman Baroque style, this is one of the last great hamams commissioned during the Ottoman Empire, a short walk from the Basilica Cistern in the old city. It has separate men's and women's sections, each centred on a domed hot room with a raised marble göbektaşı. Over the centuries it has drawn visitors from Kaiser Wilhelm II to Franz Liszt.
Sheer historical grandeur — the marble hot rooms are among the most photographed hamam interiors in Istanbul.
