The experience

A towering cylindrical monument on the Tiber, originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian around AD 139 as a mausoleum for himself and his family. Over the centuries it became a papal fortress, prison and refuge, connected to the Vatican by an elevated passage. A spiral ramp climbs through its interior to terraces with sweeping views across Rome.
