At the far end of the Saga-Toriimoto preserved street, past where the bamboo-grove crowds turn back, 1,200 moss-covered rakan statues carved by amateur donors between 1981 and 1991 grin across the hillside of this 8th-century temple.

A 20-minute uphill walk beyond Arashiyama's photogenic core; most visitors stop at the bamboo grove and never reach it.
