The 23-hectare garden of the Luxembourg Palace, begun in 1612 for Marie de' Medici and now run by the French Senate. Children still sail model boats on the octagonal Grand Bassin, and the 1630 Medici Fountain — moved to its present spot in 1864–66 — carries Auguste Ottin's sculpture of Polyphemus surprising Acis and Galatea.
