The experience
A rambling ten-hectare park around the pink Necessidades Palace, laid out in the 18th century by King João V and now half-wild and little-visited. It has three lakes, roaming geese and peacocks, one of Europe's larger cactus collections and a distinctive octagonal greenhouse. Overgrown in parts and quiet, it is a favourite for locals seeking calm, with free entry.
