A village worth the long drive · Pontone, Italy

From the piazzetta of Pontone — the terraced hamlet of Scala above Amalfi — a stepped footpath through pines leads to a cylindrical 15th-century watchtower on the rock spur dividing Amalfi from Atrani.
It's reachable only on foot via village stairways from Pontone, so day-trippers on the coast road below never see it.
It's only worth the detour Mar–Nov. Turn up outside that window and you're looking at a different place; we'd rather say so than sell you the photo.
