The best-preserved building of ancient Rome, completed under Emperor Hadrian around AD 126 on the site of an earlier temple by Agrippa. Its coffered concrete dome remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, lit by a single open oculus at its centre. In use as a church since the 7th century, it also holds the tomb of the artist Raphael.
To stand beneath the perfect dome and the open oculus, an engineering marvel almost two millennia old.
