A stretch of coast worth the drive · Barcelona, Spain

A wide, well-kept beach in the Poblenou district, created during Barcelona's 1992 Olympic redevelopment of its waterfront. Quieter and more local than Barceloneta, it offers a long stretch of sand for volleyball, sunbathing and swimming, with lifeguards, showers, a seaside bike path and beach bars along the promenade. Popular with residents and families for a calmer day by the sea.
A calmer, more local alternative to the packed central beaches.
It's only worth the detour Best May-Oct. Turn up outside that window and you're looking at a different place; we'd rather say so than sell you the photo.
