The flagship building of the Benaki Museum, in a neoclassical mansion beside the National Garden. Its collection traces Greek culture in chronological sweep, from prehistory and Byzantium through the Ottoman centuries to the 1821 War of Independence, with icons, gold jewellery, embroidered costumes, paintings, and two elaborately carved 18th-century wooden reception rooms rebuilt from mansions in northern Greece.
