A green pocket the city kept · Hanoi, Vietnam
Hanoi's central park, built from 1954 onward by volunteer labour from ordinary residents, in the hope that the country would soon be reunified — which is where the name comes from. It is built around Hồ Bảy Mẫu, the lake that fills most of its middle, with paddle boats, jogging paths and open lawns around the water. It was renamed Lenin Park between 1980 and 2003, then went back to Thống Nhất when the Lenin name transferred to Chi Lăng garden. Two entrances serve it: one on Lê Duẩn by the Central Circus, and one on Đại Cồ Việt opposite the technical university.
Fifty hectares of lake and lawn where Hanoi does its tai chi, its ballroom dancing and its courting.
