A trail worth the early start · Tokyo, Japan

A 599-metre forested peak in Hachioji, at the western end of Tokyo Metropolis, with eight marked trails to the summit and over 1,200 plant species on its slopes. The Takaosan Yakuo-in temple complex sits partway up the main route. A funicular railway and a chairlift run from the base to roughly halfway, and the mountain takes more than 2.5 million visitors a year.
A real mountain with a Mount Fuji view from the top, 50 minutes from Shinjuku on a single train.
