An island worth the crossing · Hanoi, Vietnam
Vietnam's oldest pagoda, first built in the 6th century during the reign of Lý Nam Đế (544–548) under the name Khai Quốc, and now standing on Kim Ngư — Golden Fish — islet at the southeastern corner of West Lake. It was moved out here in 1615 after the Red River ate away the bank it originally stood on, and a short causeway links it to Thanh Niên street. Its last major reconstruction was in 1815. Water surrounds it on three sides, which is the whole point of visiting at dawn.
A 1,500-year-old pagoda on its own islet, with West Lake on one side of the road and Trúc Bạch on the other.
