A gallery worth the detour · New York, United States
An artist-led non-profit in the brick hall built in 1866 for Pioneer Iron Works, which made steamrollers, railroad track and sugar-refining machinery, burned in 1881 and was rebuilt. The sculptor Dustin Yellin bought it in 2011, opened it to the public in 2012 and reopened it under the Pioneer Works name in 2013 after Hurricane Sandy. It now runs exhibitions, artist residencies with metal, wood, print and music studios, a science programme and its own press. Galleries and garden open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 6pm.
An 1866 iron works turned free artist-run hall, with the studios upstairs actually in use.
