The 67.5-metre Obelisco rises from the Plaza de la Republica where Avenida 9 de Julio meets Avenida Corrientes. Built in 1936 from Cordoba white stone to mark the 400th anniversary of the city's first founding, it has become the defining symbol of Buenos Aires and the gathering point for celebrations and protests alike.
It is the single most recognisable symbol of the city and its liveliest crossroads.
