The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian, completed in 1979, is a Modernist cone rising about 75 metres in central Rio. Designed by Edgar Fonseca, its concrete-clad conical form seats around 20,000 people. Inside, four straight stained-glass windows soar from floor to ceiling toward a cross-shaped skylight, flooding the vast open nave with coloured light.
