The Arcos da Lapa, or Carioca Aqueduct, is an 18th-century colonial aqueduct with 42 whitewashed stone arches spanning central Rio. Completed around 1750 to carry water from the Carioca River, it later became a viaduct for the Santa Teresa tram. Today it presides over Lapa's nightlife district and remains one of the city's most recognisable colonial landmarks.
Take in Rio's great colonial aqueduct, still carrying the historic Santa Teresa tram overhead.
