Green space the city keeps · Marrakech, Morocco
The formal garden laid out beside the Koutoubia mosque, immediately south-west of Jemaa el-Fnaa: rose beds, palms, benches, paved walks and fountains, with the 12th-century minaret rising over the whole thing. Inside the grounds stands the small white-domed koubba of Lalla Zohra, a local folk figure. It is a free public park with no gate and no closing time. Almost everyone crosses it in ninety seconds on the way to the square, which is the mistake.
The best free view of the Koutoubia minaret, framed through rose beds instead of traffic.
