A landmark that earns the queue · Rome, Italy

A long oval square built over the 1st-century Stadium of Domitian, whose racing track shape it still follows. Its centrepiece is Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, flanked by the Moor and Neptune fountains and the Baroque church of Sant'Agnese in Agone by Borromini. Street artists, cafes and the elongated open space make it one of Rome's great gathering places.
To take in a masterpiece of Baroque urban theatre where Bernini and Borromini face off across the square.
