A bar worth the late walk home · Barcelona, Spain

A tiny, sign-less family tavern in Barceloneta, open since 1944 and run by the same family for generations. There is no printed menu; the kitchen sends out grilled sardines, squid, chickpeas and the bomba, the spicy stuffed potato croquette said to have been invented here. Cash-only and lunchtime-only, it is always crammed with dockworkers and in-the-know visitors elbow to elbow at marble tables.
The birthplace of the bomba, and one of Barceloneta's last truly old-school seafood taverns.
