A temple people come back to · Hanoi, Vietnam
The eastern guardian of the four temples enclosing old Thăng Long, at 76 Hàng Buồm in the middle of the Old Quarter. Founded in the 9th century for Long Đỗ, the local spirit who defeated the sorcery of the Tang general Cao Biền, it was renamed White Horse after 1010, when a white horse is said to have walked out of the temple and traced the line on which Lý Thái Tổ should raise his citadel walls. The plan is laid out in the shape of the character for 'three', with ironwood tie-beams, carved altars, imperial titles, old bells and red-lacquered palanquins. Entry is free.
The founding legend of Hanoi, kept in a dark hall on a street of beer stools.
