A wood worth the quiet · Smolare, North Macedonia
Photo: Rašo · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
North Macedonia's tallest waterfall (39.5 m), hidden in century-old beech forest on Mount Belasica — ~300 stone steps climb to a wooden bridge right in front of the falls.
Tucked into the far southeastern corner near the Greek and Bulgarian borders, far off the Ohrid–Skopje route.
It's only worth the detour Apr–Jun. Turn up outside that window and you're looking at a different place; we'd rather say so than sell you the photo.
