Terraced rice valleys, bamboo water wheels and northern Vietnam's largest karst forest, with Thai ethnic-minority stilt-house homestays inside the reserve — Sapa before the crowds.
Wedged between the famous Ninh Binh and Mai Chau circuits with no train link, so tour buses drive right past.
