A street worth walking twice · Paris, France
Photo: Nicolas Vigier · CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Opened in 1800 on the site of a demolished mansion, this is the oldest covered passage in Paris and one of the first glazed shopping arcades in Europe, lit by gas from 1817. The engraver Stern settled here in 1834 and the arcade became one of the earliest homes of the Parisian stamp trade.
Two centuries of Paris retail compressed into one glass-roofed corridor that still works for a living.
