A landmark that earns the queue · Mexico City, Mexico

A vast public library opened in 2006 near Buenavista station, designed by Alberto Kalach. Glass-sided halls of floating, seemingly suspended bookshelves run the length of the building, with Gabriel Orozco's whale-skeleton sculpture 'Mátrix Móvil' hung in the central void. Native-plant gardens wrap the exterior.
The gravity-defying floating stacks are one of the city's most striking interiors, and admission is free.
