A museum worth the hours · Istanbul, Turkey

A Byzantine church near the old land walls, the Chora holds some of the finest Late Byzantine mosaics and frescoes anywhere, depicting the lives of Christ and the Virgin in shimmering gold. Rebuilt in its present form in the 11th century and decorated in the early 14th, it served as a mosque from around 1500, then a museum from 1945 to 2020, and is again a mosque. It draws far fewer visitors than the Sultanahmet monuments.
Byzantine mosaic and fresco work more intimate and better preserved than anything in Hagia Sophia.
