A landmark that earns the queue · Marrakech, Morocco
A large riad complex at 121 Rue Mouassine, built on much older foundations, restored over years and opened to the public in 2016. It holds two gardens — an Islamic chahar-bagh laid on cardinal axes with citrus, roses and geometric basins, and an exotic garden of species from around the world — plus a restored pavilion, an exhibition hall, a bookshop and a tower. Water still reaches it by khettara, the gravity-fed underground channel from the Atlas foothills, and it is one of the very few places in the medina where you can see the system that made the city possible. Open every day, last entry 30 minutes before closing.
The medina's only large historic garden you can walk into, with the water engineering left visible.
