Somewhere to stop moving · Marrakech, Morocco
Built in the 16th century under the Saadians and in continuous use since 1562, this is the hammam of the Mouassine quarter, still heated by a woodfire furnace behind the bathing rooms. It keeps the public-hammam layout of separate men's and women's quarters rather than the private cabins of the spa houses, and the treatment is the plain one: kessa-glove gommage, black soap infused with herbs, then a ghassoul clay wrap. Open daily 9:00 to 21:00. It sits between the two worlds — a real neighbourhood bath that now takes as many visitors as locals, and priced accordingly.
The oldest working hammam in the medina, at neighbourhood prices rather than riad-spa prices.
