A trail people talk about · New York, United States
1,146 acres, the third-largest park in New York City, and the only one where the subway drops you at a trailhead. Five long trails cross it, including the Putnam Trail on the roadbed of the old New York and Putnam Railroad, the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway over the buried 1842 aqueduct, and the John Kieran Nature Trail. Van Cortlandt Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Bronx; the 6.2-mile cross-country course is where the city's schools race. The 1748 Van Cortlandt House, the 1749 Vault Hill family burial ground and the 1895 golf course — the oldest public course in the United States — are all inside the boundary.
A subway ride that ends at a railbed you can walk north on until you leave New York City.
