Twenty steep-roofed gassho farmhouses, some 100 to 350 years old, folded into a mountainside terrace in Gokayama — a lived-in UNESCO World Heritage village where most houses are still private homes and a few double as minshuku and museums. It delivers the Shirakawa-go postcard without the crowds.

Everyone floods Shirakawa-go down the road; Ainokura is smaller, harder to reach, and stays quiet even in peak season.
