A landmark that earns the queue · New York, United States
Cass Gilbert's neo-Gothic tower of 1913 at 233 Broadway, built for the five-and-dime magnate Frank Woolworth and the tallest building in the world until 1930. The lobby is a vaulted hall of marble, mosaic and carved detail, with a stained-glass skylight over the stair and old storefronts in the back lobby. Nikola Tesla was an early tenant. The upper floors are now private apartments and the building is privately managed, so it is not open to walk-in visitors.
The best interior in Lower Manhattan, and the only way in is a booked tour.
