A historic stone stairway in the old port district of Saude, in the area known as Little Africa, widely regarded as a birthplace of Rio samba. On Monday and Friday nights an open-air roda de samba forms around a table of musicians, drawing a big street crowd from early evening past midnight. Drinks are sold cheaply from surrounding stalls.
A free, open-air street samba in the very cradle of the genre, as raw and local as Rio nightlife gets.
