The experience

The original home of the pastel de Belém, baking to a secret 1837 recipe from the neighbouring Jerónimos monastery on Rua de Belém. Behind the takeaway counter is a warren of blue-and-white azulejo dining rooms seating hundreds. The tarts arrive warm, dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar, and are still made only here under the protected name.

The birthplace of Portugal's custard tart, unchanged since 1837 and a genuine landmark.
