Somewhere to stop moving · Istanbul, Turkey
A Turkish bath designed by the architect Mimar Sinan and built between 1578 and 1583 for the Ottoman admiral Kılıç Ali Paşa, in Karaköy near the water. A long restoration completed in 2012 returned the single great domed hall to use; the main dome spans about 14 metres and rises roughly 17 metres. It offers the traditional sequence of warming on the heated marble, a kese scrub and a foam massage.
The most beautifully restored classical hamam in the city, calm and generous with time rather than rushed.
