A green pocket the city kept · Lisbon, Portugal

A greenhouse garden at the top of Parque Eduardo VII, built into a former basalt quarry. It is made up of three linked houses — the cold (fria), hot (quente) and sweet (doce) greenhouses — each a different microclimate of ferns, palms, streams, small waterfalls and ponds. The slatted roofs keep the light soft and the air still and cool.
A hushed indoor-outdoor jungle where the running water and filtered light muffle the city completely.
