A museum worth the hours · Marrakech, Morocco
T'hami El Glaoui, made pasha of Marrakech in 1912, built this palace in 1910 on a scale designed to impress the guests he intended to receive in it. It was inaugurated as the Museum of Confluences in 2017 under the National Foundation of Museums, with exhibition halls arranged around a rectangular courtyard holding a four-part riad garden, and rooms of Moroccan decorative arts and ethnographic objects under carved cedar, zellij and chiselled plaster. The palace was damaged in the September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake and reopened after repairs. Closed Mondays.
The private palace of the last great pasha of Marrakech, opened up with its zellij and its garden intact.
