A museum worth the hours · Marrakech, Morocco
The palace Si Saïd ben Moussa, war minister under Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz, built for himself on Derb El Bahia in the second half of the 19th century. The state took it over in 1930 and split it in 1957 between artisan workshops and a museum; the north-east wing ran as a primary school until 1987 and the first floor once housed the first Marrakech radio transmitter. Today it is Morocco's national museum of weaving and carpets — urban and rural rugs, hanbels, handiras, akhnif capes, horsemen's costume and brocade from the Tensift, the Sous, the High Atlas, the Anti-Atlas, the Bani and the Tafilalet, plus woodwork, jewellery and pottery from the Marrakech region. Closed Mondays.
Morocco's national carpet collection, laid out in a minister's private palace two lanes off the Bahia crush.
