The largest and first of the Joseon dynasty's five grand palaces, established in 1395 by the founding king Taejo after he chose Hanyang (present-day Seoul) as the capital. Behind the stone-flagged courtyard of the Geunjeongjeon throne hall sit the lakeside Gyeonghoeru banquet pavilion and the National Palace Museum and National Folk Museum on the grounds.
The single most complete picture of Joseon court architecture, laid out across expansive walled courtyards you can wander for hours.
