An island worth the boat · New York, United States
A 0.39-square-mile island in Long Island Sound, roughly 1.5 miles long by half a mile wide, with about 4,400 residents, marinas along both shores and a single main street. It built America's Cup yachts at the Nevins yard and kept the racing fleet in sails from its own lofts. The original 1901 steel bridge was replaced by the New City Island Causeway, which opened to traffic on 29 October 2017. One road in, one road out, and no reason at all to drive.
A New England fishing village at the end of a Bronx bus route, complete with boatyards and a lighthouse.
