Lisbon's grandest square opens directly onto the Tagus, framed on three sides by canary-yellow arcaded buildings rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake under the Marques de Pombal. At its centre stands an equestrian statue of King Jose I; the triumphal Arch of Rua Augusta closes the north side. For centuries this riverfront was the city's ceremonial gateway from the sea.
The city's monumental front door, where the Baixa grid meets the river in open, walkable space.
