A wood worth the quiet · Tokyo, Japan

A 200,000-square-metre nature reserve in Shirokanedai run by the National Museum of Nature and Science, roughly ten minutes' walk from Meguro Station. Unlike Tokyo's other green spaces it is deliberately left unlandscaped: forest, marshland, ponds and ancient pines are allowed to grow as they would, with paths and the ruins of a medieval villa running through. It is a research site that happens to be open to the public.
The only place in central Tokyo where the greenery has not been pruned into a garden.
Everything above is free: the name, the photo, the rating, the exact spot.
