The experience
9,155 acres of open water, salt marsh, wetland, island, dune and woodland inside Gateway National Recreation Area, and the best birdwatching in New York City — 365 species recorded, which ranks it second among all 417 units of the National Park Service. Two trails loop the West Pond and the East Pond, and diamondback terrapins and horseshoe crabs come ashore on the bay beaches to lay eggs. Hurricane Sandy breached the West Pond in 2012 and the repaired loop only reopened in November 2021. The A train to Broad Channel puts you a walk from the visitor centre on Cross Bay Boulevard.
