A stretch of coast worth the drive · New York, United States
A mile of Atlantic beach split into fifteen numbered bays, one of only three beaches in Gateway National Recreation Area designated for swimming. The bathhouse was designed by John L. Plock in 1932 and remodelled in 1936–37 by Clinton Loyd under Robert Moses, Gilmore D. Clarke and Aymar Embury II, shifting from Moorish-Byzantine to Art Deco. A Wise and Son street clock went up on the boardwalk on 4 March 1941 and was later restored by the Park Service. Open daily 6am to 10pm; the Q35 bus crosses the Marine Parkway Bridge from Flatbush Avenue and drops you at the door.
Robert Moses's Art Deco beach palace, still standing, on the least crowded guarded sand in the city.
