The experience

A tiny, tile-and-wood tavern on Calçada do Forte near Santa Apolónia, on the edge of Alfama. The short menu is chalked on a board and changes with the market, running to seasonal petiscos such as pica-pau, slow-cooked pork cheeks, octopus and house-cured fish, with a Portuguese wine list to match. With only a handful of tables it fills fast and takes bookings.
