A museum worth a slow afternoon · New York, United States
A townhouse at 319 West 107th Street given over entirely to the Russian-born painter and mystic Nicholas Roerich, with more than 150 of his works hung across three floors. Most are mountain scenes from his Himalayan and Central Asian expeditions, small in scale and startling in colour. The house also runs a programme of concerts and literary evenings in its front rooms. Closed Mondays.
A hundred and fifty Himalayan canvases in a Manhattan townhouse, and it costs nothing to walk in.
