A museum worth a slow afternoon · New York, United States
A stone building of 1799 raised as the carriage house of a country estate, then converted in 1826 into a day hotel where New Yorkers escaped the crowded lower city. It is now a museum of furnished period rooms run by the Colonial Dames of America, with a garden alongside. The whole thing sits wedged between apartment towers on East 61st Street, an 18th-century leftover in one of Manhattan's densest neighbourhoods. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
An 1799 carriage house turned country hotel, marooned among Upper East Side high rises.
