A landmark that earns the queue · Taipei, Taiwan
What is left of the largest Japanese Buddhist temple ever built in Taiwan, on Zhonghua Road at the northern edge of Ximending. After 1945 the compound was taken over by the military, a uniform factory and evacuees from the Dachen Islands, and became in effect a dependents' village; most of it, including the main hall, burned in 1975. The bell tower and the 1923 Shuxin Hall survive as listed monuments, and the site was restored and reopened in 2013.
An empty stone platform where Taiwan's biggest Japanese temple stood, five minutes from Ximen station.
